Post Treatment Instructions

  • Orthodontic ‘bands’ help hold the wire in place, which is used to retract your teeth. These bands are placed on four of your molar teeth.

  • Normally you will have tight contacts in between your teeth, which will not allow us to place the band. Therefore, the orthodontist will place ‘separators’ in-between your teeth to create space to place the ‘bands’.

  • The separators need to be in place for atleast three to four days. During this time you may experience pain, which will be relieved with an analgesic.

  • It is important for the separators to stay in place for the entire four days. If they do come out or break please give us a call for a replacement.

  • It is important to maintain good oral hygiene, once the brackets, (metal or ceramic) have been placed on your teeth. For this please use the special orthodontic toothbrush prescribed. You may also use a fluoride mouthwash on a daily basis, to prevent tooth decay during the course of orthodontic treatment.

  • Avoid hard foods, to prevent these brackets from breaking or separating from your tooth. If this occurs, please bring it to our notice immediately. Also please save the bracket for it to be re attached to your tooth.

  • After completion of the fixed phase of your treatment, you will be provided removable retainers to complete the remainder of the treatment. This will need to be worn as instructed by the orthodontist to help retain your teeth in its new place and to prevent relapse. Please note that your treatment is incomplete without proper usage of this removable appliance.

Your child has just undergone a dental procedure under Local anaesthetic. Please read the following instructions carefully.
  • A local anaesthetic was administered to provide a painless and comfortable dental experience to your ward.

  • A local anaesthetic also ensures that the dental procedure is completed within a reasonable period of time.

  • The anaesthetic administered is no different from the one administered to adults.

  • The anaesthetic can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 4 hours to wear off.

  • Children tend to bite and chew on their lips/ inner cheeks due to the altered sensation. They also tend to rub their cheeks with their palms.

  • Children normally do this unintentionally and are unaware of what they are doing as they cannot feel the pain while biting their lip/cheek.

  • Hence it is very important for the parent/guardian to watch the child constantly until the anaesthetic wears off.

  • It is also important for the parent/guardian to remind the child to not bite his or her lip/cheek during that time.

  • In the unfortunate event of your child biting his or her lip/cheek which was anaesthetized, you will notice an ulcer the following day.

  • This ulcer can appear to be quite large. The remedy for this ulcer is the application of ‘Dentogel’ before meals to enable your child to eat comfortably, and warm water mouth rinses as often as possible.

  • Please be rest assured that this ulcer will heal uneventfully within a week’s time.

  • For any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us.

It is important to attend your check up appointment one week later.

In case you have undergone an additional bone grafting procedure at the time of implant placement, it is normal for little particles of the graft material to be pushed out during the course of healing.

The implant will take anywhere between 3 to 6 months to integrate with the bone following which a ‘second stage’ procedure has to be performed. If you notice a small boil on your gum or have a foul taste in your mouth or are able to see metal through your gum please contact us immediately.

TAKING CARE OF DENTURES
  • It is recommended that you wear your new acrylic denture during the daytime for one week, removing them only at night. This will help you get adjusted to them quickly. It however does take time to get accustomed to them.

  • If there are any sharp edges/points or sore spots in your mouth from wearing the denture, these need to be trimmed by your dentist.

  • In general eat from both sides of your mouth while wearing your dentures. This prevents the denture from lifting off from one side while chewing from the other side.

  • Keep your denture clean. Use normal soap, water and a toothbrush to clean them. Do not use toothpaste.

  • Keep your dentures out of the mouth at night in a cup of water. You may add a denture-cleansing tablet, which dissolves in the water, but mechanical cleansing of the denture is mandatory.

  • At any point of time if you get an ulcer anywhere in your mouth which does not heal in 2 weeks time, please contact us immediately. If the denture has a sharp edge it will be trimmed and you will be asked to return for check ups thereafter.

  • Any white lesions due to constant rubbing of your denture must be checked by your dentist at the earliest to prevent oral cancer.

  • Annual review is recommended for a full denture wearer.

INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING DENTAL EXTRACTION
  • Avoid Spitting out or Rinsing your mouth today.

  • You may gently clean your teeth tonight but avoid heavy rinsing.

  • Do Not Smoke until the Extraction site heals completely. This is to prevent a ‘dry socket’.

  • In case you experience excessive bleeding, take a piece of clean gauze, moisten it with water. Place it on the extraction site and bite firmly for 15 minutes.

  • If the bleeding fails to cease please contact us.

  • Tomorrow onwards rinse your mouth with warm salt water as often as possible, preferably every 2 hours.

  • Some amount of swelling around the gums and externally on the face is expected. This is normal and will start subsiding in 48 to 72 hours.

  • Eat only Soft foods today and avoid hard/sharp foods. Also try and chew from the opposite side to the Extracted tooth.

  • You should start taking the painkillers prescribed to you before the local anaesthetic wears off.

  • Children should be observed until the anaesthetic wears off as they tend to chew the sides of their tongue and lips, which can lead to serious consequences.

  • If you have been prescribed antibiotics make sure you finish the prescribed course.

  • A stitch or two may have been placed following extraction of the tooth. In this case it needs to be removed in 5 days. Kindly return to the dental office for this minor procedure.

INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING GUM SURGERY
  • The Periodontal pack should remain in place until it is removed at your next appointment.

  • If particles of the pack chip off during the week, do not be concerned as long as you do not have pain.

  • For the first three hours after the operation, avoid hot foods / drinks to permit the pack to harden.

  • Some amount of swelling around the gums and externally on the face is expected. This is normal and will start subsiding in 48 to 72 hours.

  • Do not smoke.

  • Do not brush over the pack.

  • Brush and floss normally the areas of the mouth not covered by the pack.

  • Use Chlorhexidine mouth-rinse after brushing.

  • During the first day after surgery, apply ice intermittently on the face over the operated area.

  • In case you experience excessive bleeding, take a piece of clean gauze, moisten it with water and place it firmly on the bleeding site for 20 minutes.

  • Do not try to stop bleeding by rinsing.

  • If there are stitches, these need to be removed in 5 to 7 days. Kindly return to the dental office for this minor procedure.

  • Follow your regular daily activities, but avoid excessive exertion of any type.
